Pope Leo: Saints show us 'history shaped by faith'

Pope Leo XIV greets participants in the “Holiness in History” Conference organized by Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, taking place at the Pontifical Augustinian Patristic Institute in Rome.

Formally “canonized holiness”, whether of ancient saints or more recent witnesses of the faith, must be substantiated by “authentic, credible testimony that is beyond any suspicion”, Pope Leo told members of the Dicastery for the Causes of the Saints, who are taking part in the “Holiness in History” Conference in Rome.

Holiness and history

Reflecting on the relationship between holiness and history—the theme of the conference—Pope Leo explained that the use of historical methods in causes for canonization is not simply to “produce historiography”, but to “bring to light the exemplary life, spirituality, and reputation for holiness” of prospective saints.

The Pope went on to explain that historical investigation must also consider how “historical and cultural evolution […] influences the very concept of holiness”.

This does not mean that holiness changes with time; instead, it shows us how “to interpret specific lived experience through the lens of the Gospel.”

The people of God, he said, “seek models for living in the present intercessors who can help members of the Church face today’s challenges and recognize the opportunities they hold”.

‘History shaped by faith’

Finally, Pope Leo said, “we must consider how the presence and witness of the saints have transformed history” by responding to God’s call in their own circumstances, “uniting faith with history and dedicating their lives” to building up the Kingdom of God.

“The witness of the saints”, the Pope said in conclusion, “reminds us of the innovative and transformative power of Easter. They show us a history shaped by faith”.
