Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

With heavy hearts, the entire Baton Rouge community grieves after the tragic shooting that occurred yesterday at the Mall of Louisiana. Our prayers are with those who were critically injured, all who were harmed, and every family whose lives have been suddenly and painfully shaken by this act of violence, especially those who have lost a loved one.

I implore the entire community of faith to pray for the first responders, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers who acted swiftly and courageously to protect lives and care for the wounded. May God grant them strength, wisdom, and peace!

Violence wounds the very heart of our community. As followers of Jesus Christ, we reject violence in all its forms and renew our commitment to be people of peace, compassion, and hope. In moments such as this, we must resist fear and despair and instead turn our hearts toward prayer, solidarity, and love for one another.

I ask all people of goodwill to join me in praying for healing for the injured, comfort for the grieving, and an end to the cycle of violence that causes such suffering. Let us also pray for deeper unity in our community and the courage to work together for peace, justice, and the protection of every human life.

May the Lord draw near to all who are hurting!

Hope in the Lord,

Most Reverend Michael G. Duca
Bishop of Baton Rouge
