Friday night message from Deacon Mike a/k/a the abitadeacon

Well, things are certainly moving rapidly and we have much to contemplate and digest.  Coronavirus is no joke and no one seems to be making jokes anymore or taking things lightly.  In Louisiana we have seen the number of cases explode from well under 100 to well over 500 with an updated death toll of 14.  New Orleans received some unwanted national news when we discovered that Saints head coach Sean Payton has the coronavirus.  In my family life, all seems well.  Wendy is mostly staying in, only venturing out for any groceries are prescriptions.  And that is about it.  I still have to work; I am a banker and banks are deemed vital.  And I'm a local branch banker so we have had customer face-to-face interactions.  Believe me, I take tons of precautions.  Moving forward y bank has decided to limit lobby interactions and focus on drive-up customers so that's a welcome move.  I am doing little as a Deacon since most liturgical functions are cancelled and social distancing calls for more isolation.  Deacons do not do isolation well.  For me there is no prison ministry, no Bible study, no functions at church, no liturgies, no Lenten devotions, very few Sacraments and if any, with very small amounts of family members present.  For me personally I've used this time to journey more intimately in relationship and faith journey.  That's a good thing, a very good thing.  I have used the various social media opportunities to witness the Mass every day, sometimes 2 and 3 times a day, and tonight I watched Stations of the Cross.  I'm learning to embrace more intimately a Spiritual Communion.  Here, I've been blogging more as a way to stay connected and hopefully be a resource of information and encouragement.  I will continue to do so.

Depending on how long this goes on there is a small wish list: I would like to learn how to utilize video on Facebook and even on this blog.  I would love to video Stations of the Cross or praying the Divine Office or even helping my parish to live-stream a Mass; currently, we don't.  Like I said, this is my wish list.

Please know that I am available to pray for and with you, to communicate with you, especially if feeling anxious and share with you this incredible cross we all are called to bear.

Meanwhile, pray often, fast some, read Scripture, watch masses and devotions on social media, talk more and interact with your family, check on friends and neighbors and stay calm, stay safe and wash your hands.
