In the life(reality) of the Permanent Deacon

Continuing the New Year with some purpose I had a good couple of days from the perspective of an active Permanent Deacon.  The first thing I did this weekend was rush home from work Friday night to relax and unwind around the house.  You know these kind of evenings are necessary and I enjoy them immensely.  They are quiet times, enjoying a nice dinner at home, some reading and TV and, if all things go as planned, bed before 9 pm.  Things did indeed go as planned.

On Saturday I began my day by attending a 1st Saturday Mass in the Extraordinary Form; a Mass offered in Latin.  When possible I am desirous of learning more about the EF but it depends so much on y schedule/ministry demands.  So soon after the Mass I was privileged to baptize young Harper Rose.  It was a beautiful, wonderful baptism!  I had baptized her older sister a few years ago.  And right after Baptism, it was off to Saturday's vigil Mass in Bush. No preaching, as Deacon I assist the Priest and lead prayers proper to the Deacon and proclaim the Gospel and the Universal Prayer.  And then, still one more place to go, we met my daughter for dinner.  Did I mention, Wendy had Brennan with her for Mass and she was so good but seemed to love being at Mass with Pops on the altar.

Sunday dawned early for me as I also assisted at the 8 am Mass.  Permanent Deacons don't get to sleep late on weekends.  After mass I went to our 1st Sunday parish social, visited with a gentleman from the parish discerning diaconate then I drove to more former parish and took advantage of Sunday morning confession time.  Confession is so beautiful, I'm so glad I went.  Then Sunday afternoon this Deacon cut some grass, prepared for the Super Bowl, which I watched, and am so glad the KC Chiefs won!

Today is the day the Church blesses throats, the Feast of St. Blaise.  Today, I had to work, all day.  Sometimes the employed Permanent Deacon just can't be everywhere.  And tonight, I'll relax some more before a very busy rest of the week!

Reality.
