To live in the metro New Orleans area in mid May is to understand it is already way too hot. And that way too hot should not retreat until October. Yet here I sit, on May 15th and in rolls a cold front, I mean a legitimate cold front. It's 50 degrees right now with a north wind of 8 -10 MPH; we actually have a wind chill in the low 40's. This time of year normally produces afternoon highs of 87 with a heat index hovering at 90 or above. Today they are calling for a high of 75 with low humidity.
For May 15th this is incredible.
Now let me tell you why this is a special gift from God for me!! I returned to work this week after two weeks or surgery and recovery. For me, a big deal itself, but complicated by the complete failure of our office AC system. Remember, the cold front rolled in this morning; this week has been hot, feel-like temps around 90. Oh did I mention, my office is a trailer so there is no insulation and no way to open windows. My staff and I have been broiling all week as we await the painfully slow repair process. So today's unexpected cool weather may pull us through. Of course chances are that because it's so much cooler today, I bet they show up now to fix the darn thing.
This week has reminded me that there can be in our lives dozens and dozens of things disappointing; the kind of things that can lead to moaning and groaning. While this will sound cliché, it is also so true: somebody has it a lot worse than you. I've wondered this week about the countless men and women who work in the heat, and all the other elements too. I wonder about working conditions in other nations that are always unbearable. And I wonder about all the amazing number of good people, fighting disease or loss of loved ones or other struggles and trudge on with life. Hopefully, we all fall back and place our trust in God and our faith and prayer life can pull us through.
So this morning, in prayer, thanks be to God for this cool weather and dare I ask, prayers for my AC to be fixed at work!
It's Thursday morning; what the heck is this??
It's a gift from God!
