July 9, 1982; a sad day in the history of the New Orleans area

Tomorrow marks an anniversary of a very unhappy day in the history of the greater New Orleans area.  On a suddenly very stormy Friday afternoon, all was at peace in the area until Pan Am flight 759, departing New Orleans for Las Vegas, crashed just 2 miles off the west to east runway into a very residential neighborhood of Kenner, La.  Kenner is the suburban community where the New Orleans Airport is physically located.  Something weathermen now call a microburst forced the plane to encounter great difficulty in it's ascent and the aircraft was doomed, hitting first a tree and some power lines before crashing into 6 to 7 homes in a quiet neighborhood.  All on board the doomed plane perished as did several people on the ground.  Needless to say the moments from the crash and for hours after were quite chaotic and confusing.  Despite all this chaos, the local emergency responders performed heroically, trying to save lives and secure the area.

This anniversary is #30 and still local New Orleanians remember.  One of our local TV stations, Channel 4, has produced some pictures and on-air videos of that tragic day.  I will provide the link.

Since that horrific event, we have been blessed in New Orleans with no air travel tragedy of the size and scope of Pan Am 759.  We pray that we never will experience such a disaster ever again.

For now, we remember and we pray for those victims and their families, who must relive that tragic day with each passing anniversary.  You know today millions of Americans, every day, travel to and fro by airplane, almost taking air travel for granted.  Everytime I fly, I say a little a prayer and put my trust in the good Lord.
