Saturday morning, like early morning, inside a prison

Almost 160 inmates at Rayburn Correctional attended our Spring Saturday retreat based on Carmelite Spirituality.  The retreat was led by Deacon Ricky Suprean, ordained with me in 2008, and Dr. Neal Faciane, a 3rd Order Carmelite.  After a brief breakfast, the retreat leaders guided us through Carmelite Spirituality effectively using music, spiritual reflections, informative talks and prayer.

After the morning session the men were treated to a meal from the "outside" from Buffalo Wild Wings, consisting of wings, carrots and celery with dipping sauce and dessert.  Believe me, the men rarely get good food or food with color so the meals were a treat.

The retreat leaders concluded this afternoon with prayer for the men especially if they had special needs.

I want to thank both Deacon Ricky and Dr. Faciane as well as Archdiocesan Prison Director John Messenheimer.

No rest for the weary with prison ministry at this institution; on Wednesday we will be visited by our Auxiliary Bishop, Bishop Fernand Cheri.

Stand by for a report on this event too.  For now, thanks be to God for a beautiful, wonderful day at prison and the gift of prison ministry.
