Archdiocese of New Orleans honored at Project Lazarus 30th Anniversary Gala
Project Lazarus supporters, including former Guardian Angels honorees (this award is given to those who have contributed hours of commitment and support to group), made their way to the picturesque New Orleans Lakefront Airport (at Messina's in the terminal) to celebrate, and to more practically, raise funds for the organization.
Warren Backer Jr. (2004 Guardian Angel Award recipient) and Eric Paulsen served as the event's emcees and as the live auctioneers. (The live auction had eight lots of art and vacation stays; there was a silent auction, too.). Interim director Steve Rivera delivered an impassioned speech about the importance of what the Archdiocese has accomplished, before Archbishop Gregory Aymond accepted the night's honors for the Archdiocese.
Gala chair Rite Moisio, along with committee members such as Bruce Gallessero (also the board chairman), Laura Fine, and Frances Smith (Frances was a 2013 Guardian Angel recipient), accompanied by Rodney Smith, were joined by Project Lazarus supporters Laura and John Smestad Jr., Arthur Roger (2000 Guardian Angel recipient), Steve Bouzon, Kelly Nolan, Kelp Littlefield and Trey Fontana, Rachel Wisdom, Carl Little, Sam Mercer and Chris Fransen, Remy Fransen, Remi and Scott Ottelin, Keflyn and Matt Fransen, Linday Brigham, Bethany Paulsen, Rebecca and Patrick Singley, Angie Bowlin and Martin Robinson, Peter Robinson, DeAnna Davis, Eddie Bonin, Dr. Troy Scroggins (2007 Guardian Angel recipient), Marshall Harris, Tommy Centanni, Becky Allen, Dustin Woehrmann, Jerry Fredieu, Jason Waguespack, and Fr. Paul Desrosiers (2009 Guardian Angel recipient), who did the event's invocation.
Project Lazarus "provides transitional housing to people living with HIV/AIDS who have no other place to live." While much has changed since June 1985, when Project Lazarus founders, Fr. Paul Desrosiers and Fr. Bob Pawell were granted approval from Archbishop Philip M. Hannan to open the doors of Project Lazarus, the mission still remains: to help people in need.
