In the life of a Permanent Deacon often opportunities come along to assist at a wedding or to conduct a prayer service with vows. I have had several such opportunities. Tonight was a special wedding. I assisted my previous pastor at my home parish; a rare chance to be back home again at St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church.
The young couple come from two families I have known for a long time and I have known both the bride and groom for many of those years. I guess you could say that I've watched both of them grow up and arrive at this moment when they became husband and wife. I was given the honor to preach and did so after proclaiming the Gospel from the 15th chapter of St. John. How wonderful to expand on God's love and the opportunity for this special couple to reflect that love in their life long love for one another.
It was so nice to witness this wedding and see so many familiar faces back at home in that beautiful Abita Springs Catholic Church. We all wound up at the reception and I truly had a good time; visiting with great friends and even dancing with my baby girl.
So here I am tonight, in the first minutes of the new day, tired and exhausted(yes both of them) and so satisfied at the witnessing of a beautiful sacramental marriage and the fellowship that followed.
But now it's time for bed as diaconate class awaits me in the early morning; 65 miles away in New Orleans!
