Two years ago I found this article which prompted me to do some real investigation. Seems like if you were from just about anywhere in what would become America at the time of the Declaration of Independence except Maryland, and were Catholic, you were ridiculed, discriminated against and sometimes threatened. We all have been taught that America was founded as a Christian nation yet the original Christians and the largest body of Christians then and now were not well received in the new experiment in freedom and democracy. Catholics, for the most part, struggled in America for a long time. Yet Catholics, remaining steadfast in their faith, persevered and helped build great nation, defended her from all enemies and built the Catholic Church into the preeminent Christian religion in the land of the free and home of the brave.
But the beginnings were tough!
