NEW ORLEANS -- Mayor Mitch Landrieu sang a tribute to Lindy Boggs, and hundreds of others filled St. Louis Cathedral with memories about the ways she had changed lives, stories that left her family touched.
"We are going to miss Lindy, and we appreciate everything she has done for us, and for women in general," said Mary Smith, executive director of the transitional shelter for women called Lindy's Place.
"Lindy was the only person on the planet that could get away with calling the Pope 'darlin'' -- and she did it -- and I heard her do it, and I could not believe it, but he did not flinch when she did," Sen. Mary Landrieu remembered fondly.
They worked to sum up the accomplishments of nine decades of an active life.
"Our grandmother was one of the smartest people I know," said granddaughter Elizabeth Boggs Davidsen.
"Lindy Boggs had a style all her own," said former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "She made things look easy, but she got them done."
"How different it is today in Congress?" noted Former U.S. Senator John Breaux. "Wouldn't it be nice if Lindy Boggs was still in Congress?"
Archbishop Aymond praised a life filled with faith.
"Lindy, our gratitude for all that you have done for your family, for our state, and for our country," the archbishop said. "Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done."
And the service ended in true New Orleans style, with a jazz funeral, and the family waving umbrellas with Lindy's favorite color.
"She'd love it, she'd love every second of it," said daughter Cokie Roberts.
The burial takes place at St. Mary's Cemetery in New Roads, La. Lindy Boggs' grandchildren promised this is not the end of an era, a celebration of her life.
