2012 has been football hell for New Orleans Saints fans. Just 3 years removed from Super Bowl glory and last year's amazing 14-4, this edition of the Saints is bad. We all know by now it really did start with bounty-gate and the subsequent suspensions of Coach Payton, along with Joe Vitt and Micky Loomis. The whole vibe of the Payton-less Saints is off. While the defense is uber bad, the offense is way out of sync too. Drew Brees has put way too much on his shoulders and he has discovered what life is like without two important offensive contributors we could not pay. Add to that an offensive line of swiss cheese and a non existent running game and you got 0-4.
Game by game, Drew Brees has played better and has arrived at a night that can be historic in the NFL. With just onr TD pass, Drew Brees breaks a 50 year passing record held by iconic Johnny Unitas. The team, the fans, and yes, Drew Brees need that record. We need something to cheer about. We need Brees to achieve this reward because as Unitas' son says, Drew is great, not just because what he does on the field, but off the field as well. What Drew Brees, and many other Saints, have meant to New Orleans post-Katrina is epic.
With the injury of Lance Moore confirmed, Drew will have to throw the record breaking TD to great receivers like Colston or Henderson, or TE Jimmy Graham, or perhaps some type of screen or dump off to Sproules or Thomas. In any event, as long as he gets the record, we will all be happy for Drew Brees!
Then the Saints need a win. Oh my do they need a win. Right now we don't need a win to start all that silly talk about getting to the Super Bowl or going 12-4 after an 0-4 start. No, the Saints need a win to stop the bleeding; to avoid major internal implosion. Despite coach and team-speak, 0-5 at this point would be devastating.
So tonight, as I watch from the comfort of my home, I am pulling for a new NFL record for consecutive games with a TD pass by our own Drew Brees, and a much needed, hard fought victory for the Saints againts the Chargers!
Only time will tell; but boy do we need it!
