On this second Sunday of May we arrive again at another Mother's Day. By the end of this special day, more phone calls will be made than any other day of the year, cards and flowers will fly off the shelves and racks at several stores, eating out will be the national pastime and familes will gather to honor momma across the country. It's an altogether good day. Mother's Day always falls on a Sunday(as does Father's Day) and I think that is good too. There is nothing more satisfying to witness than families gathered together at Church with the mom in their lives for Sunday Mass. For us Catholics, Mother's Day also happens to fall in the month we dedicate to Mary; the perfect model for moms and for the Church. At the end of Mass today, Catholic Churches will offer a special blessing for our moms. Here is that special blessing:
Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
On this Mother's Day I am most thankful for a wonderful wife, of now almost 35 years, who is the mother of my two wonderful children. I also thank God for the gift of our 1st grandson who will arrive in September; so this is a special mother's day for my daughter-in-law(and I guess my Son too). I remember my mom with great affection and happy memory on this 6th Mother's Day since her death in 2007. And I'm prayerful for a healthy recovery for my mother-in-law who is facing some medical challenges on this Mother's Day.
For my family this day will be spent eating crawfish with all the extras per my wife's personal wishes. Our daughter will be with us along with a friend of hers from college who is far from home today. And we will enjoy the day and thank God for the gift of mothers.
