The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Saturday) is the Feast of the Immacualte Heart of Mary. Today’s liturgical observance was instituted by the Catholic Church after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus because of the very close link to the devotion to the Heart of Jesus.

The devotees of the Sacred Heart are likewise devotees of the Heart of Mary. In fact, many religious organizations have been formed and are flourishing with their devotion to these so-called “Two Hearts.”

However, one must be aware of the basic differences between the two. First, the Sacred Heart of Jesus must be worshipped and adored, especially in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, while the Immaculate Heart of Mary should be venerated for it symbolizes the Blessed Mother’s earthly life which was lived in simplicity and obedience to the will of the Father. The Sacred Heart of Jesus “overflows with a saving love for all humanity” while the Heart of Mary “shows her maternal protection for all children of God.”

The image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is portrayed as having been pierced with seven wounds, symbolizing the Seven Sorrows of Mary. We remember the words of the prophet Simeon – “your soul will be pierced by a sword” (cf. Luke 2:25-40) whenever we look at the image of the Immaculate Heart. The Immaculate Heart has also been depicted in various Marian apparitions such as in Fatima when she appeared to the three children and in France when she appeared to Saint Catherine Laboure.

As we celebrate today the Feast of Mary’s heart, we entrust our hearts to her. Like her who always submitted herself to the will of God, may we also learn to totally entrust our lives to God who is full of love and goodness.
