NEW ORLEANS -- Hokie Gajan has learned that he has cancer, but the WWL Saints Color Analyst says he is ready to beat the disease, according to WWL Radio.
"I feel great," he said today. "I'm doing the Saints game Sunday in Washington."
Hokie plans to be alongside Jim Henderson in the broadcast booth when the Saints take on the Redskins at noon Sunday.
The longtime color analyst, Saints scout, Saints running back and LSU running back is waiting for further test results to determine specifics of the cancer and develop a plan of attack.
"I'll get my diagnosis & treatment schedule next week, and I hope to be in that booth calling the games with Jim for as long as I can stand him."
Hokie says as people find out he has cancer, they have been reaching out to him to share encouragement and well wishes.
"Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers," the 54-year-old said to his fans and friends.
WWL Radio Program Director and Operations Manager Diane Newman insisted, "Hokie Gajan is tougher than tough. He has a team of the world's best doctors and nothing but a positive attitude. We have no doubt Hokie will beat this as so many others do. And, with the prayers and support of Saints and LSU fans everywhere...we got this!"
Gajan has been the WWL Saints Color Analyst for more than a decade.
After playing for LSU, the Saints drafted Hokie in the 1981 NFL Draft.
Gajan led the NFL in rushing average in 1984 with six yards per carry.
In four years with the Saints, Hokie carried the ball 252 times for 1,358. That's an average of 5.4 yards per carry. He also caught 63 passes for 515 yards, an average of 8.2 yards per catch. Hokie rushed for eleven touchdowns and caught two TD passes
Hokie would go on to be a scout for the Saints before landing in the broadcast booth.
I'll definitely pray for him. Hope he beats cancer.
