Pope Francis announced in January that he would enroll Father Serra in the canon of saints during his trip to the United States this month, and the Vatican later announced the canonization would take place at a Sept. 23 Mass on the east steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. While two miracles attributed to a saint’s intercession are usually needed for canonization, Francis dispensed the requirement of a second miracle for Serra, citing his holy life.
Although not the first canonized American saint, Serra’s canonization is historic, as it will be the first canonization celebrated on American soil. Many of America’s hierarchy are expected to concelebrate the momentous occasion, and the liturgy will be largely celebrated in Spanish.
Junipero Serra was beatified at the Vatican by Pope St. John Paul II in 1988.
