POPE Francis has estimated that he only has two to three years to live before he goes to God and hinted that he may possibly retire.
The 77-year-old made the premonition aboard his jet on the way back from South Korea. While he had a lung removed as a teenager due to infection, Pope Francis is not known to be suffering any health issues except for some nerve problems.“Must treat them well, these nerves, give them mate (an Argentine stimulant tea) every day,” he said. “One of these neuroses, is that I’m too much of a homebody,” he said, recalling that he had not taken a holiday outside of his native Argentina since 1975.
Francis said he would consider doing what his predecessor Benedict XVI did last year and retire if he felt he could no longer do the job, saying he would step aside “even if it does not appeal to some theologians.”
“I see it as the generosity of the people of God. I try to think of my sins, my mistakes, not to become proud. Because I know it will last only a short time,” he said.
He then, apparently lightheartedly, suggested his time on Earth was limited.
“Two or three years and then I’ll be off to the Father’s House,” he said.
It comes as three relatives of Pope Francis, two great nephews and their mother, were killed in a traffic accident in Argentina.
The dead include a baby of eight months and a two-year-old toddler, police commissioner Carina Ferreyra said.
Their father, the pope’s nephew, is in serious condition, she said.
