My Facebook message today: To parents, bring your kids to Mass!

To my dear Catholic parental friends on FB: there are many and varied ways to teach our children to love God and to worship Him. As Catholics, we believe that the highest form of worship is the Mass, particularly the Sunday celebration of the Mass!!! God Himself has commanded us, as a Father, to worship at least once a week in community. Sadly, there is much evidence here on FB and in the real...ity of everyday life, that many young families skip Mass on Sunday. I'm not here to judge, rather to love. It appears that we get very busy in our lives, Sunday included. Sometimes, Mass fails to make the cut, whether we just want to sleep in or have a lazy Sunday morning, play golf, run errands, dress up in our football finest and head out to the Saints game! The latter may be surprised to learn that a large contingent of Saints players, coaches, and staff attend Mass very early on Sunday mornings before each game! Now I understand that parents have tough decisions to make about Mass depending on the age and number of children and other factors. Certainly these can only be addressed by the parent. However, getting even the youngest child to Mass is a beautiful and efficacious thing! Once baptized, the child is a member of the body, and the body is always less than it can fully be when one of her members is missing. Moms and Dads, your disposition to Mass, not just going but why we go, will say plenty about the faith life of our children. I know this personally, for I am a dad, and my devotion was not always where it is today. I know of which I speak. Nothing is more beautiful, more special than to see a family present in worship of our Lord and God! Moms and dads, please come to Mass, and bring the kids! Teach them now that all that they are, all that they have, all that they ever will be, is pure gift from God. And He asks for your presence in the presence of His Son at Sunday Mass, fully present for each of us! Offered in love for you, your children and family!
