Vatican reform takes courage, determination, Pope tells new Council for the Economy
Reform at the Vatican will “require courage and determination,” Pope Francis said in an address to the first meeting of the newly established Council for the Economy. Reform is “a significant challenge that takes loyalty and prudence,” the Pope said. Speaking more specifically to the work of the Council for the Economy, he said that the financial and management practices of the Vatican should reflect an “awareness of her responsibility to protect and manage prudently her assets in the light of her mission of evangelization, with particular care for the needy.” “We must not stray from this path,” the Pope told the Council. “Everything, transparency, efficiency, everything is for this purpose. It is all for this.” The Pontiff said that the new Council, chaired by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, has work “of great weight and importance” to do in supervising the economic practices of the Holy See. He added that the group has 15 members, including eight cardinals and seven laymen, and the latter “are not 2nd-class members” but full members with their own special expertise to bring to the work of the panel.
