Sleet, snow; what to do in south Louisiana

Yep, a great deal of south Louisiana is waking up to sleet, frozen rain and even some snow.  Now unlike our friends to the north, this stuff is very light, is not really sticking to much yet all hell is breaking loose.  School systems are rushing to be the first to get it out on the news: no school today; a snow day, or more accurately: a sneaux day?

I'm all for public safety, but this is a great example of why we don't do winter well.  The sleet, snow, etc. remains very light and will not accumulate on roadways.  Dew points and humidity are low meaning this will likely weaken with each passing hour of the day.  Still, the panic ensues.

As far as winter goes, this has been a harsh one for folks living down here near New Orleans, Baton Rouge, etc.  Most winters, we will get 3-4 hard freezes meaning 24-28 degrees.  Last year I remember using my heat lamps and dripping the water 2 or 3 times.  This year we have been below 28 about 15 times and below 20 twice, with another prediction of 18 for early next week.  The number of days with high temps remaining in the 40's and 50's has been too many to count.  This is huge for us down here.  It is very normal, in most winters, for even very cold mornings to turn into 62-65 degree afternoons.  We have had many such afternoons, but a lot less in this winter.

We know we have nothing to complain about, when compared to the rest of the country.  Still, for us, this is brutal.  And the most amazing thing; this will be all but a faint memory once summer starts, usually in late April, and we melt under relenting heat and sun for almost 6 months.  Therefore, I say, enjoy winter.

Snow and ice, bless the Lord!
