It was another big celebration in New Orleans for the community of Deacons on the Feast of one of the first Deacons from the pages of the Acts of the Apostles! Every December 26th the Deacons of New Orleans are invited to beautiful St. Stephen Church in a beautiful area of old New Orleans to worship, remember, honor the dead and then fellowship in community. Our Archbishop, Gregory Aymond, was gracious enough to be with us and preside. He first walks to the memorial of deceased Deacons and wives and says a prayer as the names of each Deacon and Deacon's wife is read. The celebration of Holy Mass is next and this year we heard a homily from Fr. Pat Williams, director of clergy and newly announced Vicar General for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. At the end of Mass the Archbishop recognized 3 classes of Deacons who were celebrating anniversaries: the Class of 2008(yours truly in that number), the Class of 1993 and the Class of 1983. The Archbishop reminded each of us that even Pope Francis, and himself, were ordained Deacons first and that Pope Francis is a fresh reminder of one who has never lost his diaconal character. The charism of the Deacon is charity!
When all the events of Church are over, the Deacons, wives and families retreat to the cafeteria for food, fun and fellowship. Because of the busy nature of a Deacon's life throughout the year, events like this may be one of a few to catch up with old friends.
So another celebration of good, holy St. Stephen is in the books. We ask for his continued prayers and intercessions on all of us and our ministry & office as Deacon!
