A homeless 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with the shooting death of a longtime Catholic deacon in Houma.
An anonymous tip led police to Leron Calloway, who was arrested without incident about 5 p.m. in a trailer in the Whispering Oaks Trailer Park.
Houma Police had earlier labeled Calloway as a “person of interest” but obtained an arrest warrant Monday on the charges.
He was wanted in connection with the slaying of 66-year-old Connely Duplantis, a longtime Houma resident and deacon at Annunziata Catholic Church. He retired about two years ago to Gloster, Miss., and was visiting his parents on Carolyn Avenue when he was shot and killed about 1 p.m. Nov. 24.
Police had initially named Calloway a person of interest, but Police Chief Todd Duplantis said evidence has led to police to believe Calloway shot the victim.
Calloway was last seen the day following the shooting near the crime scene, where he led police on a foot chase.
Police said Calloway is being held in the Terrebonne Parish jail awaiting a bond hearing.
The warrant does not change pending first-degree murder and armed-robbery charges against 18-year-old Randy James Wallace of Thomas Drive in Houma. Houma Police arrested Wallace Wednesday in connection with Duplantis’ slaying.
Police believe robbery was the motive for the shooting.
