Approaching my 5th anniversary; service as a Permanent Deacon

Tonight I am a content man on this cold night in December with my #1 grandson in the house, sleeping away, while we visit with his mom & dad!

I also am content in knowing that tomorrow morning marks 5 years since that amazing day when I, and my formation classmates, were ordained as Permanent Deacons, for service to the Church in and of New Orleans.

The picture taken above was from my first weekend at St. Jane de Chantal as I held the Book of the Gospels, inscribed with a personal message from my ordaining Bishop, Archbishop Alfred Hughes.

The rose vestment I wore that day was a gift to the class from the widow of a brother Deacon who had gone home to his reward some time earlier. I was blessed to have received it!

Tomorrow, and this weekend, will pass with no fanfare or special events because I am immersed in all things #1 grandson.  My Calvin will be my focus these next 5 days as it should be.  This serves as a poignant reminder that we are called, as Permanent Deacons, to prioritize our lives, giving glory always and first to God, then being attentive to our family roles, be it husband, father, son, pops!

I know my classmates are indeed getting together this weekend and I will be with them in spirit and prayer.  I will spend some time tomorrow reflecting on those exciting days, the five years of my service and all the things, including the good and the bad, the expected and unexpected, that has occurred in this same passage of time that marks my 5th anniversary.  And one such reflection indeed will be the blessing of Calvin Tyler Talbot, the abitadeacon's #1 grandson!

From the ordination rite:

Receive the Gospel of Christ whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe and practice what you teach...
