It feels weird. My wife and I are spending the night in a nice hotel that happens to be just 15 minutes from the house. Why? Because my house is a wreck. But it's all good. Wife Wendy has declared that because the baby, you know him as #1 grandson Calvin, is coming for his first visit in December, the entire house must be transformed. Months of painting, accessorizing and installing new kitchen countertops have ended but the biggest transformation began today. New floors are being installed from front to back and side to side and there truly is no place to sleep tonight. I mean the bed is covered by other pieces of furniture, the TV is disconnected and the refrigerator and even the toilet is residing tonight on the front porch. Yes, I'm so proud!
I really need to brag on my wife Wendy, or Hurricane Wendy, as I now refer to her, as this has been her project. With my incredibly busy schedule and suffering still from an unrepaired hernia, Wendy has borne the vast majority of the hard work. And what an incredible job she has done. Despite the demands of such a big job, she has fulfilled her commitment to helping me and the greater diaconate community by not missing a meeting of the group of inquirers and their wives. She enjoys her role in assisting the wives of the inquirers who naturally have plenty of questions and many concerns about the life-long changes that their husbands will be experiencing.
Back to the house and the hotel down the road. This is by far the greatest and most extensive make over to happen at Casa Talbot. We moved in to our country home on 10 acres in 1996. Other than maintenance and a coat of paint or two, we've done nothing to the home. And it will be nice to welcome Calvin, and his mom & dad too, to a freshly remodeled home. As for the night spent in a hotel, well I can't stand sleeping in disorder, without a TV, and no possibility to blog before bed. We checked with our favorite hotel chain, the one we use exclusively when traveling to and from North Carolina, and lo and behold, we have two free nights on our account. So down the road we drove, with the house in total disarray yet that much more closer to renovation heaven, and we have a nice comfortable room, free internet and Wi-Fi and all the TV channels one can handle. And with the location of the hotel so close to the interstate, it actually is a few minutes closer to my work!
So I'm going back to relaxing if you don't mind, maybe peek at the Carolina v. New England game on the tube and wake up ready to head off to work from my home away from home.
In this month of giving and expressing thanks; thanks be to God for the gift of my wife, my family, my home and my good night's sleep!
