A news story on local media gave scarce details of a helicopter crash in the Gulf of Mexico early Wednesday morning. In it's usual matter of fact way, the media reported that 1 person died and 2 hurt in the crash. It would be many hours later that the Archdiocese of New Orleans would report that the deceased was one of its active Permanent Deacons.
Deacon Patrick Becnel was 47 years old, a husband and father of 3 children. In 2006, Deacon Pat was ordained in St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans for service to the people of God in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Deacon Pat's class was scheduled to be ordained just months after the area was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. He, along with his formation brothers, would have to wait 6 more months for ordination while the Archdiocese recovered.
Amazingly, Deacon Pat served in our southern most civil parish (county) where Katrina's wrath was devastating, not to mention several subsequent hurricanes and tropical storms after Katrina. He served the people of St. Patrick's Parish in the community of Port Sulphur and was a pastoral chaplain for the parish (county) sheriff's office.
On so many levels this is a tragic loss. We first and foremost share our love & prayers with his devoted wife and children. And we pray for those Deacon Pat ministered to, at his church parish and across the community. Finally, the community of Deacons for this Archdiocese mourn the loss of a brother in service; one who came to serve and not be served.
I know many of you will join me in prayers for the repose of the soul of Deacon Patrick Becnel, and for comfort and healing for his family. May he rest in peace. Well done, good & faithful servant!
