NEW ORLEANS -- Thursday was a major milestone for former Saint Steve Gleason and New Orleans.
Last May, Steve Gleason went to the United Nations and for 20 minutes he told world leaders in government, business and philanthropy, while there was no cure for his ALS, technology could change lives.
And this is what happened.
"Hi there. Can you hear me OK? This is my first public speech using my public voice, the first of many," Gleason told the audience through voice banking technology.
In front of the crowd, Team Gleason announced the construction of a special residence for people with neuromuscular disorders, such as ALS and MS, in St. Margaret's Skilled Nursing Residence.
Technology allows people to open curtains, turn on TVs, open doors and turn on lights with eye activated technology.
JPMorgan Chase and Company heard the United Nations speech and wanted to open doors, literally and figuratively. And Thursday they gave $350,000 to the Team Gleason House for Innovative Living at 3525 Bienville St. It's only the second like it in the U.S.
"The Super Bowl Host Committee have embraced this project and are featuring it as one of this year's legacy projects. So, thanks," said Gleason.
The fundraising will be ongoing for this project and as Drew Brees said at the press conference, these projects are making New Orleans not just a great place to visit, but a great place to live and raise a family.
