    NEW ORLEANS —
The Archdiocese of New Orleans said Tuesday evening it will shut down Cathedral Academy as part of a strategic plan for Catholic Schools in the area.
Parents were informed of the pending move at a meeting that included Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jan Lancaster.
The cloure will be effective with the 2013-14 school year, officials said.
"We know that this decision may cause some angst among parents and students, but we are doing all in our power to make this an easy and smooth transition for everyone," Lancaster said in a statement.
Cathedral Academy students will be able to transfer to St. Stephen Catholic School in Uptown, which said it would accept any student interested in enrolling.
Parents were also given information on other Catholic schools in the city.
Cathedral Academy, located on Dauphine Street in the French Quarter, is the only Catholic school slated for closure this year, officials said. Ironically, it was the first Archdiocese campus in New Orleans to reopen following Hurricane Katrina, and was the site of a visit by Prince Charles in November 2005
