My recent hectic schedule prevented me from my ode to December post. So here we go on this quiet, albeit rather warm Sunday evening.
December is clearly my favorite month of the year; it's not even close. First of all, to qualify for this honor you must exist in the cooler weather months of the calendar. Naturally, December qualifies. Therefore all my favorite months are from October through March with December the favorite for many obvious and some not so obvious reasons.
The obvious are the celebration of Christmas, the anticipation of Christmas and the warm feeling most folks have this time of year. Also obvious, if we get lucky, the weather cooperates grandly. December is usually not too frigid cold but certainly is cool and we can get frost, a light freeze but almost never snow, although that did happen twice in the last five years. I especially love the Advent and Christmas season as an ordained minister because of the rich liturgical celebrations and the chance to reconnect with those who, despite lukewarm faith, almost always drift back to church for this holy season.
December is the month when I usually take a vacation, will see family that I often do not see and it is just a happy time. This December I have a calendar that would blow most people's minds. Personally, the highlight will be a 7 day roadtrip to visit #1 grandson, Calvin, and his mom & dad in beautiful North Carolina. We will have a great visit, about a week and a half before Christmas to celebrate with my Carolina family.
On the Church level, relative to my diaconate, I have a month with four weddings(although two are done as of last night), at least one Baptism, we already celebrated the ordination of twenty new brother deacons, and we have the extra liturgies for both the Feast of the Immaculate Conception this weekend and Christmas at the end of the month.
What a great month! I'm not sure I understand how quickly she got here this year but here she is; in all her glory. Can I request one thing: turn cooler quickly. Today we hot a high of 80 degrees; ick.
So welcome to my favorite month of the year: December.
