Gleason transported to hospital; alert and responsive

NEW ORLEANS — Former Saints safety Steve Gleason was taken to the hospital in the first quarter of Monday night’s game after he was unresponsive, team officials said.
Gleason, who is battling amyotrophic lateral scleroris (ALS), was responsive and alert, officials said he was wife Michele reported.
Gleason had participated in a charity event – Gleason Gras – a day earlier. The fundraiser was for his foundation.
The free-spirited former player is a beloved figure in New Orleans. He blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown in the 2006 re-opening of the Superdome a year after Hurricane Katrina hit.
