Having been very disappointed that my LSU Tigers lacked that crazy killer instinct from 2011, and so frustrated by their performance against Florida, not to mention lackluster effort in wins against Auburn and Towson St., I decided a few weeks ago that this season is over. Sure, we would easily win 7 or 8 games and be bowl eligible, again, but this was not to be that special year.
Lo and behold comes the highly promoted national TV game against South Carolina. Everyone picked Spurriers team and the Gamecocks were being fitted for the national title, or at least a solid shot. Game check: LSU beat the 3rd ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. So much for pronouncing them dead prematurely. No, they did not always play well, and yes, the QB still looks like a deer in the headlights. Still, LSU won! That set up the improbable matchup yesterday against the Texas A&M Aggies, new to the SEC. The Aggies are playing well in 2012 and this game is on their field. Did I mention, kickoff is for 11 a.m., as in the morning? Not a favorite time of day for LSU football. Yet, LSU fights off horrible first quarter football on both sides of the ball and pulls out another great win against another ranked SEC team! There they are 7-1.
Now before you get this wrong, what I'm most amazed at is that LSU is 7-1. That means that a 12 game season of football, played mostly in the fall, is 2/3rds over. How did that happen? I long for October to get here; cooler weather, a break from months of oppresive heat and humidity and football and festivals and holidays to follow. My college football season is 2/3rds over. When did that happen? I guess while I've been so busy and hectic with my ministries as a Deacon and so many weddings and baptisms and prison visits. Maybe while I've been ecstatic about the arrival of Calvin, #1 grandson! Perhaps the demands of my new job and the intense learning curve as I get more involved in leading my new branch at a new bank.
Are you savoring these autumn months? Down here they are a nice change of pace but it is far from glorious like it can be in other parts of the country. We have had cool mornings; I like that, but a cool afternoon still means 80. It is getting darker now, I like that too. At work, the church next door is running a pumpkin patch. I like seeing that too. And my LSU Tigers are 7-1, still in the hunt and now taking a one week rest before Alabama; wow! that would be a great win.
I still have much to look forward to in this, my favorite half of the year. After all, that does not end til we arrive at April and that is some time away.
So for now, I love the fall, LSU is 7-1 and the Saints won a 2nd game, in a row today. Sunday night is all good, get ready Monday morning!
