An Archbishop with his flock that just happens to be in prison

Amidst a very busy schedule and huge Church events in Rome in just a week, our New Orleans Archbishop, Gregory Aymond, spent a Wednesday night with his flock at Rayburn Prison.  This would be the Archbishop's first visit and the men were overwhelmed by his visit tonight.  Archbishop Aymond was so remarkably generous with his time.  First of all, the prison is located in Angie, La. about 100 miles and 2 hours away from the Archbishop's residence.  He arrived at 5 pm to meet with the Warden and Administration and to be treated to a meal prepared by the prison staff.  After a delicious dinner and good conversation the Archbishop moved to the chapel to be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Both he and one of our frequent visiting Priests, Fr. Ronnie Calkins, heard many confessions before vesting for Mass.

Mass started at 7 pm and the Archbishop choose the prayers for Masses for those incarcerated.  Beautiful words for the men gathered in community tonight.  The readings were from the daily Mass and the Gospel reminded us that Jesus calls us to follow him now and radically.  No maybe.  The Archbishop commented on the men's decision, despite the pain and despair of prison, to follow Christ!

The Archbishop invited the men to offer their prayers of the faithful to go with those he spoke.  The men from their hearts offered prayers for family, brother inmates and even the wardens and cadets.  At the sign of peace the Archbishop made sure he offered peace with a handshake or a hug with every single man in the place, almost 70 in total.  The highlight of Mass of course is the Eucharist and the Archbishop and Fr. Ronnie distributed Communion to all who could receive.  After Communion, the Archbishop offered final prayers and blessings then stayed in the room to personally greet each man as they prepared to return to their dorms.  It was an incredible night; a mighty movement of God!

I want to thank Archbishop Aymond for the gift of his time and effort and the gift of self.  His visit tonight will have long lasting effects for the men.  They witnessed their spiritual father take the time on a Wednesday night to say you matter to me; that I'm in solidarity with you, that God loves you and Jesus is your answer for eternal life.  Wow!  What a night!

Our ministry to the men at Rayburn resumes next Wednesdaya and every Wednesday and Thursday thereafter.  This weekend the Kairos team moves in for the 4 day retreats I've posted about before.  I can't make this one but will be in union with them by prayer.
