This is typical for a Permanent Deacon. After I work all day, every day this week; I have an Evangleization Committee meeting and Catholic Radio meeting Monday night, Bible study and possible Baptism seminar Tuesday night, prison ministry Wednesday night, meeting with couples Thursday night, filing paperwork for annulments, paperwork for prison ministry, 2 Masses assisting next weekend. And whatever else comes up. The Deacon provides much needed assistance in the diocese and parish and is a vital ministry in the life of the Church. He is ordained; he receives Holy Orders. He does plenty but his identity is in who he is. And he is often under appreciated and even despised. He can handle that because we are the icon of Christ the Servant; and He handled it and more. Most of the time he is most poorly appreciated by those who are family or close friends. That is sad. I love the ministry of the Permanent Deacon and have never been more blessed to be one than this past week and in the weeks and months to come. By the way, his pay is zero and his expenses he bears; thats not a complaint; it's a fact. And he prays for you and most especially for those who society marginalized and yes, for those who attack him and the Church.
