June 4, 1977; a Saturday afternoon 35 years ago at the now shuttered St. Julian Eymard Catholic Church; two very young people promised their lives to each other. I do not know if Wendy and I could ever have imagined all that life has been as husband and wife since that very hot afternoon in late spring 1977.
We are very blessed as our lives have been rich, full of family and friends, the successful lives of now two grown, college graduated children, and a rebirth of our faith as the foundation of our marriage. The old poem, Marriage takes Three, really means something for us. Not until we returned to that realization did we realize all that married life can be. It is both daunting and exciting to be comfortable with the realization that as sacramentally married spouses, I'm charged with helping my wife on her journey to heaven as she is charged with the same for me.
For our 35th we opted for a two day get away to neighboring Biloxi Mississippi, about an 80 mile drive from home. Here, we were lucky to get a beautiful room, overlooking the Biloxi Bay which reaches the Gulf of Mexico, at the amazing Beau Rivage Resort. Everything has been amazing except neither of us knows how to gamble. We do know when to walk away however.
So off we go to enjoy the rest of this amazing day, another June 4th for most of you, but the anniversary of the most amazing day of our lives; the day that started it all!
We will also pray for the Sacrament of Marriage on this day and for all the many couples anticipating marriage!
