Second "major fail" this weekend for the New Orleans Saints

Saints Apply Franchise Tag To Drew Brees

Brees Talks Contract Extension
The New Orleans Saints applied the franchise tag to Drew Brees on Saturday, according to a Saints spokesperson.
The team and representatives for the record-setting quarterback had been in protracted negotiations on a long-term contract, and as recently as last week, Brees said he was optimistic a deal would be done.
In applying the franchise tag, however, the Saints are conceding such a contract cannot be reached. The team had until Monday to designate Brees as the "franchise player."
The move means Brees will be paid $14.4 million dollars for the coming season, and the Saints will retain exclusive negotiative rights for on eyear.
In 2011, Brees set NFL records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a completion percentage of 71.2. His prolific passing numbers helped the Saints set a new NFL high for total offensive yards in a season with 7,474.
He has been with the Saints for six seasons, leading them to a win in the 2010 Super Bowl.
As a result of the decision and the failure to reach terms with Carl Nicks, Robert Meachem and Marques Colston, those players are expected to become free agents this month. Nicks is considered one of the top offensive linement in the NFL, while Meachem and Colston are key components in a deep roster of wide receivers.
