On this very weekend for the past 2 years I have been a member of the Kairos team ministering inside Rayburn Prison. This is an extra ministry I've enjoyed supporting beyond my usual visits to the Catholic community at Rayburn as their pastoral care chaplain. Kairos is an ecumenical group of dedicated lay members, with a few ordained ministers on board, that ministers to selected inmates who the state prison chaplain, along with the input of the warden, have not participated in faith based programs in the prison. The basic idea is that the team, made up of Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals, through a series of large and small group sharings, is to bring these men into relationship with Christ! And based on my prior experience it works.
So this year brought great pain as I relaized I can't split myself in two; although I'd love to do so. I will not be on this spring retreat as other diaconal ministries and responsibilities dominate my calendar. You may recall in the past that I have asked you for prayers for the retreat, and cookies. We always bring in tons of cookies which for an inmate is a real treat. Since I will not be visiting the prison this year during this Kairos I have no need for cookies. However, we all can pray! The retreat just began a few minutes ago and will continue until late Sunday afternoon. So can I have your prayers? I thought so. A simple prayer for my brothers in Kairos that they be led by the Holy Spirit throughout this weekend, and for the men who have been selected to participate; that they too be open to hear God's word and witness the gift of service from the Kairos team.
Thanks for your prayers for this humble request and, if I can be so bold, offer your Mass intentions for all the men we minister to inside correctional facilities and prisons!!
