Without a doubt, the sports mecca of the United States of America is New Orleans, Louisiana. Tonight, in front of a national audience, the New Orleans Saints whipped the Detroit Lions in the 1st round of the NFL playoffs. The final score was 45-28 and is the 3rd straight game in which the Saints scored 45 points. But this game was not without some concern as Detroit started strong, collected two big 1st half turnovers and went into halftime with a lead. The offense looked a little out of sync and the defense was not really playing well.
Here comes the second half and the Saints absolutely dominated. In just the second half the Saints put together 5 TD drives and stayed ahead throughout while collecting two turnovers themselves. So proficient was the Saints offense that there were no punts tonight.
Drew Brees was awesome; no shock there! Outstanding efforts tonight by the usual suspects: Graham, Sproles, Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, and those receivers, Colston, Henderson, Meachem! And the offense line is outstanding!
So here I am, along with a few hundred thousand friends and neighbors, a long suffering Saint fan that has watched this Sean Payton coached team get to the NFC championship in 2007, win the Super Bowl in 2010 after a 13-3 2009, win an additional 11 games last year(despite the Seattle failure) and now 13-3 in 2011 and 1 post season win in 2012. Since Payton has come here, the New Orleans Saints have now won 5 post season games in a total of 6 seasons! In the previous 38 seasons of the whole history of the Saints, they had won just one playoff game; and that did not come until 2000.
This is New Orleans Saints heaven; although we surely want 3 more wins here in 2012.
So tonight, I'll bask in the glory of Saints victory #1 in the playoffs and now I eagerly await the LSU v. alabama encounter Monday night. May tonight's big victory by the home team be a great omen for what's to come as LSU brings home the BCS national championship!
