When you are home convalescing on a Friday afternoon, if you spend anytime on facebook or the internet in general you will come across some things that make you go huh? I'm pretty huh'd out today. On the pages of the web today is the stunning announcement of the appointment of Howard Stern as a judge on the popular, family-friendly TV show known as America's Got Talent. I for one have liked this show. I'm certain I will no longer watch as long as that foul-mouthed and provocative Stern graces the show. Do we really need Howard Stern on network TV week after week?
News broke today of the death of Christopher Hitchens, the well known author, historian, contrarian and avowed atheist. I'm taken by the sheer volume of words and time used up on Catholic blogs, I guess now mine included, to cover his passing. The death of anyone is sad but the death of one who fought so vigorously to remain atheist to the end is indeed sadder. But always, in the end, we never know. The death of Hitchens comes on the same day the Catholic world says goodbye to Cardinal John Foley. He was committed to Christ to the end. I hate to say it but I think I've seen more ink about Hitchens passing than that of the good Cardinal. And maybe that be appropriate.
This Tim Tebow thing is getting way out of hand. As a football story it is great stuff. The fact that he gives God all the glory is great stuff. But our dear friend Tim Tebow is allowing the story to be framed by a not all that God-concerned media and football talking heads. First of all, Tim Tebow ain't the first athelete to come down the pike praising God and giving all the glory to Him. And Tim Tebow ain't the first athelete to kneel or as we call it in Catholicism, genuflecting. To call it "tebowing" is making the focus on Tim Tebow, not God. And if Tebow is all he claims to be, that should make him mad. And I may be one of the few Catholic bloggers that remains just a little concerned about the ministry of the Tebow family which has on more than one occassion, and prominently in the Phillipines, addressed Catholicism as something to be rescued from.
What an odd grouping of protaginists today as Stern, Hitchens and Tebow.
On this Friday in Advent I choose to focus more of my time on the coming of Christ, in ALL the ways the Church teaches us, as well as the yes of Mary we will celebrate this Sunday and in thankfulness for God pulling me through my recent health scare!
