Thanksgiving 2011 and like we have done for so many years we pause to give thanks. For many of us this special American holiday is spent around the table, with family and friends, eating and drinking and eating some more. We will reflect that we have much to be thankful for and count our blessings throughout the day.
When we truly stop and think about thankfulness our minds and hearts turn to God. For those of us who pray to God frequently it becomes so easy to pray in a spirit of petition. In other words, our prayers all too often are asking God for this or that; and we should as we have faith that He truly hears our prayers. How many of our prayers are those of praise, worship and thanksgiving? When we pray, is from a grateful heart? Do we spend part of everyday not just in prayer, but in thanksgiving? This would be most profound to reflect on on this Thanksgiving Day 2011.
As a Catholic people we must always be thankful for the great faith that God has entrusted to us. Many times we take His holy Church for granted. The Church is that which Christ left for us to teach and guide us and bring us home safely to him at the end of our earthly pilgrimage. We are mightily thankful for God's most unselfish act of love by sending us a Son, the Word made flesh that dwelt among us. By the sacrifice of Jesus and the shedding of his blood, we are healed.
So as I prepare to sit down today for my Thanksgiving dinner and to express my thankfulness I will express that thanks to the Almighty Father who has given me, and all of us, our everything.
May you and your loved ones enjoy a most wonderful Thanksgiving Day!
