The long farewell for Archbishop Philip M. Hannan

The beginning of the long farewell for Archbishop Philip M. Hannan has begun.  Earlier this afternoon his body was received by Archbishop Aymond, Archbishop Hughes and Bishop Fabre at the entrance to Notre Dame Seminary.  Several Priests were pall bearers as his casket made the slow steady climb up the stairs.  At about 5 p.m. the community of Priests gathered in the chapel to begin evening prayer.

At 6 p.m. this evening the public viewing period began, and will conclude tonight at 9 p.m.  Viewing resumes tomorrow morning and continues all day and half a day Wednesday before the casket carrying Archbishop Hannan will be loaded onto a horse drawn carriage for a slow journey to St. Louis Cathedral.  There will be a period of public viewing Wednesday evening and Thursday morning at the Cathedral before the 2 p.m. funeral.  Already, because of the overwhelming outpouring of mourning and love for Hannan arrangements are being made for a large overflow crowd in Jackson Square.

So the long farewell begins.
