Here in the piney woods of Abita Springs, La we have been experiencing steady to strong rainfall for over 4 hours. I would estimate that since midnight, we have had at least 4 to 5 inches of rain. I am also surprised that we are having steady winds of in excess of 25 mph but gusts, particularly when the rain is hard, at least 50-55 mph.
The actual storm is still 20 miles south of the coast, nearer to the Lafayette area of Louisiana; a good distance from New Orleans. Early reports from New Orleans and the Southshore communities are of heavy rain, squalls and standing water in the usual spots. As I sit here in my home this morning I really wonder how my personality would have endured sitting here for a big storm like Katrina. Even this small tropical storm can be unnerving. In the big picture, however, things could be so much more difficult.
The big question today will be can we get to church this afternoon? I'm assigned to the 4pm vigil and if the roads are clear; I'll be there. Heck, I understand that my employer is open for business as are most of the usual Saturday retail spots in Covington and Mandeville.
Tropical Storm Lee will need another 36-48 hours to clear the metro New Orleans area so we have a ways to go. Keep saying your prayers for us as we ask for the intercession of Mary, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to help us!
