For not the first time in my life the Labor Day weekend is ushered in by tropical weather. Tonight we are facing about 4 consecutive days, now thru Monday night, under the threat of Tropical Storm Lee. No, this will nit be a Katrina event; heck we hope not even an Irene event. But these many days with constant rain, high tides south of here and winds always blowing from 20 to 70 mph usually equals some hardship. Many areas in the New Orleans area will flood. And throughout southeast Louisiana we can count on power outages. But we will gladly endure these things if no one is hurt or losses their life and if we can hopefully keep water out of everyone's home.
Six years ago, as another Labor Day weekend began, we were still evacuated from the aftermath of Katrina. But this was travel day. We left Greensboro on that Friday morning and stopped just short of Meridian, Ms. And again, everyone in the hotel was either trying to get back, like we were, to see the devastation or had fled north having endured the impacts of the killer hurricane. It was the most erie Friday night of my life.
To tell the truth I had no great plans for this weekend. I was going to cut grass and work in the yard. That won't happen. I have a wedding to finish preparing for; that will happen. And I have Mass duty at 4 pm Saturday and 9 am Sunday. Provided the roads are clear; I'll be there. And this may be a big weekend for some reading and reflection.
My #1 goal for the next few days(besides our collective prayer that we all survive unscathed) is that the power stay on. Yes, I have a generator but it's not acting nice. And it can be a pain to hook up but it does beat no power. With Katrina no power lasted about 3 and a half weeks, for Gustav(Labor Day weekend 2008) we were without power for over 3 days.
So we prepare and pray as T.S. Lee comes to us. May God protect us all!
