HAMMOND, La. -- It’s been an emotional week for parishioners at the Holy Ghost Church. On Friday, they paid respects to the man who has been their priest for the past five years.
Those who knew Fr. Edward Everitt say he preached hope and brought out the best in people. And they say there will be a void at Holy Ghost Church now that he's gone.
Police believe Everitt was shot to death with his own gun during a weekend getaway at a beach house in Waveland, Mississipi.
A convicted felon who worked on the house has been arrested in connection with the murder. Authorities say 31-year-old Jeremy Wayne Manieri confessed to the killing.
Police believe robbery was the motive, because Manieri was found driving Everitt's car in Florida.
Now, parishioners say, they're just hoping for closure.
“I just would like to see him for the last time. I won’t be able to make it tomorrow, but tonight I had to come,” said parishioner Teresa Pourchau.
Parishioner Mary Ann Rousciano Margiotta said, “It’s just very important that I be here and I see him. I have to have some closure, and this is the way I have closure."
