Archbishop Philip Hannan, 98 and increasingly frail, has been moved from his home in Covington to an assisted living center, the Archdiocese of New Orleans said Wednesday.

Archbishop Philip Hannan will have an apartment at Chateau de Notre Dame, where he will take advantage of the home's assisted-living services.
Hannan's caregivers moved him into Chateau de Notre Dame, an institution behind Notre Dame Seminary founded during his tenure as archbishop, said spokeswoman Sarah MacDonald.

"The Hannan family and Archbishop Gregory Aymond feel this move is in the best interest of Archbishop Hannan as his health declines," the archdiocese said in a statement.

Chateau de Notre Dame provides a continuum of care for the elderly, from independent living to skilled nursing care.

The archbishop will have an apartment and take advantage of the home's assisted-living services, spokeswoman Sarah MacDonald said.

The retired archbishop had been living in a small house in Covington, attended by caregivers.

Hannan survived a dangerous bout of pneumonia that hospitalized him last winter, but left him permanently weaker.

The eldest of four surviving New Orleans archbishops, Hannan served from 1965 to 1988, when Archbishop Francis Schulte was named his successor. Hannan continued performing the duties of archbishop until Schulte’s arrival in New Orleans in early 1989. Archbishop Alfred Hughes served after Schulte and before Aymond.
