The Archdiocese of New Orleans said Jan Daniel Lancaster, a former elementary school principal in Mandeville and chair of the education department at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, will be the next superintendent of parochial schools.

The archdiocese scheduled a news conference Friday to present Lancaster, who will lead a system with 28,000 students in 69 schools.

Lancaster spent seven years as principal of Mary, Queen of Peace school in Mandeville, where enrollment tripled during her tenure.

Before that she was the principal at St. Agnes in Jefferson and assistant principal at Our Lady of the Lake in Mandeville.

She holds a doctorate in education administration from the University of Memphis in 2003.

Lancaster left at the end of the last school year to teach at Our Lady of Holy Cross College. Its website lists her as chair of the department of education.

Lancaster will replace Sister Kathleen Finnerty, an Ursuline nun who came to the job in 2007.

Archbishop Gregory Aymond asked for the resignation of Finnerty and three other top school officials last year in a broad shake-up of educational leadership.

Catholic schools generally face increased educational competition from public schools revived under the post-Hurricane Katrina charter schools experiment.

The number of students attending local Catholic schools has fallen by 5 percent since 2007.
