Retired Archbishop Philip Hannan returned to an undisclosed hospital yesterday after a fall at the skilled nursing facility that is his new home, the Archdiocese of New Orleans said today.
A mid-morning statement from Archbishop Gregory Aymond did not say whether the 97-year-old Hannan was injured in the fall.
"It is expected that Archbishop Hannan will remain in the hospital for a few days for observation and testing," the statement said.
Aymond said Hannan is "stable and now resting comfortably."
Hannan, who had been living in Covington, survived a dangerous bout with pneumonia that hospitalized him for a week late last month.
After his discharge he moved to an undisclosed skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation.
He served as archbishop of New Orleans from 1965 to 1988.
