A New Orleans Saints update; my perspective

Fresh off victory #9 what is the outlook for the reigning Super Bowl champs? Some say they are peaking, having now won 5 straight. And still others say they are getting healthy at the right time with Reggie back, Pierre maybe ready this week and the defensive backfield all healed. All true. Yet, others say the Saints allowed two very bad teams to come back from huge deficits to actually take the lead late into the 4th quarter. Still others have commented accurately that the Saints are getting hit with lots of penalties these days. And others just acknowledge the fact that the Saints are chasing another this year and are not the chased. For what it's worth; my perspective:

The New Orleans Saints are 9-3. I beleive they have only had such stellar a record twice before: the 12-3 first ever playoff squad of 1987 and the Super Bowl championship year we still revel in. I'm trying to think if this may have happened on one of the early nineties squads but I don't think so. And this is a 9-3 immediately after the 16-3 Super year. Seems to me the previous World Champs, Pittsburgh, would have loved to be 9-3 this time last year; they were not and has anyone checked the record of the team we played in that Super Bowl? Yep, the Colts are an amazingly weak 6-6. So the 9-3 looks pretty good, especially since we once were 4-3.

Despite the closeness of the Cowboys and Bengal games the defending World Champs won two tough road games. And despite the penalties and poor effort by our special teams, Drew Brees is still capable of getting the Saints in the endzone. The focus now is can the Saints keep the momentum going and win big, especially when they face the likes of Baltimore and Atlanta; especially Atlanta?

I say yes, but, with a few obvious suggestions: Knock off the stupid penalties, can we get someone, anyone to kickoff into the opposing end zone, tighten up the pass defense, and o-line please keep Drew upright every down. If these things can be accomplished, I think the Saints can play with and beat anyone.

But what about Atlanta and winning the division and home field? Easy answer: can't worry about it. Not until we play those dirty birds should the Saints think about them. Can't take the Falcons into the game against the Rams, Ravens, etc. When we play them; beat them. Remember, that alone won't get it done. But again, the Saints can only control each game they play and the head to head encounter with Atlanta.

So keep the faith Saints fans. Think about this: since they teed it up last September, including the playoffs and Super Bowl, the boys in black & gold are an amazing 25 wins and 6 losses. And for now, we are defending champs.

This is not intended to dismiss the problems that do exist but somehow, someway, the Saints are winning. So bring on the Rams and do what you should do against weaker teams. Just win baby; just win!
