St Thomas; from doubt to great faith

While most of us are thinking about the long holiday weekend and the celebration of the 4th of July, we pause today and celebrate the life of St. Thomas the Apostle. Even casual Christians know of St. Thomas because of the poignant Gospel story often referred to as doubting Thomas. It was Thomas who perhaps wanted to be cautious and confirm or perhaps he doubted because of the amazing events in such a short period of time. In any case, Thomas wanted to see the Resurrected Jesus and probe his wounds.

Jesus, always coming to us and being patient with our doubts, satisfies the request of Thomas. And Thomas indeed sees and probes the wounds that Christ bore for him, and us, in His Crucifixion. Thomas doubts no longer: "My Lord and My God".

This is a great example today for many of us because we doubt. Thomas wrestled with his doubts but eventually submitted and became a devout defender of the faith. We too can wrestle with our doubts but submitting to Him, we can follow Jesus in this life and hopefully, the life to come.

Thomas became a well traveled missionary and went as far as India, where he suffered martyrdom for the teachings of Christ and the Church.

So let us ask St. Thomas the Apostle to pray for us and show us how to put aside our doubts and fears and follow Him.
