I've decided to put my long-term 48+ year relationship with the New Orleans Saints on hold. Understand clearly, the relationship is far from severed, it's just on hold. You could say I'm taking a sabbatical in hopes for a robust return to a wonderful relationship. Yes, the Saints are the home team. We all realize that 32 teams only get to play NFL football, 32 cities get to claim a team. New Orleans and the great state of Louisiana is one such location. The Saints are the home team, and that makes them my team!
The Saints have given me and every other Saint fan ample opportunities to walk away. The history from 1967 thru 1987 is all bad performance and uninspired effort. The Mora years gave us life, hope and a glimpse of something better. But that love affair lasted maybe 4-5 years and it was back to all bad. Then the Saints brought in Mike Ditka and the team almost fell apart. The Haslett years did give us the first playoff win ever but he tanked too including the awful 2005 Katrina season where it looked like our home team was gone forever. Then came 2006, Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and the Saints went where the Saints had never been: a NFC championship game. Even though the Super Bowl was not to be then, we only had to wait 3 more years to not only get to the big game but win it; Super Bowl Champs! Even a couple of post Super Bowl seasons were decent, especially 2011 but now, we are back in the crap tank.
The how and why of how the Saints went from first to among the worst are well documented here and almost everywhere by bloggers and sports experts alike. So bad are some of the egregious offenses that I have decided to place my relationship on hold until the Saints address the following and come clean with the general public:
1. What has to happen to fire Rob Ryan? Good God, fire Rob Ryan no later than tomorrow!
2. When will Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton proclaim publicly that the following signees are big-time, huge busts: Jarius Byrd and Brandon Browner? For that matter why can't talented C.J. Spiller make a bigger impact for the Saints?
3. When will the same Loomis and Payton declare that first round picks have been huge failures? Even if Ingram and Cooks have a great game, it is too little too late for the bang for the buck. Andres Peat, not looking much better.
4. Did I mention FIRE Rob Ryan?
5. Explain to me again how ditching Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stiles was going to help Drew Brees extend his career far into the future?
When I hear something, anything remotely interesting from Saints management about 1-5 above, especially numbers 1 and 4 I will be happy to embrace my Saints with whole heart and return to a robust relationship. Until then, I just don't care that much anymore!
