Pope speaking frankly about going to Mass!

Pope: If you don't feel the need for God's mercy, don't even bother going to Mass!

Rome had a nice break from all the recent cold and rainy weather. On Wednesday it was nice and bright during the Pope's general audience. The Pope got out of his popemobile for a few moments, to greet pilgrims. 

He continued his catechesis on the Sacraments, focusing specifically on the Eucharist. He explained that when going to Mass, one needs a humble attitude. 

POPE FRANCIS

"If you don't feel the need for God's mercy, or if you don't acknowledge your sins, don't even bother going to Mass! We go to Mass because we recognize our sins and we want to receive God's forgiveness, by taking part in  His redemption and forgiveness.” 

He then talked about distractions in Mass. Distractions that are superficial and that take the attention away from the actual celebration. In fact, his comments were welcomed with applause. 

POPE FRANCIS

"I ask myself, and we should all ask ourselves: 'When I go to Mass, how do I live the experience? Am I concerned about helping and reaching out to others who have problems? Or am I somewhat indifferent? Or maybe I'm all about the gossip, saying 'Did you see what he or she was wearing?' This is heard sometimes after Mass right? It happens and it shouldn't. We should be more concerned with our brothers and sisters who need help, those who are dealing with an illness or a problem.” 

Towards the end of the audience, the Pope greeted bishops from the Czech Republic, who are visiting Rome as part of their 'ad limina visit.' In fact a choir from that very country gave a little extra rhythm to St. Peter's Square.
