  • New Orleans archdiocesan schools must unify grade structure by fall 2015 -- or else

All Archdiocese Catholic schools in greater New Orleans will have a uniform grade structure by fall 2015. Elementary schools will include pre-kindergarten to seventh grade, and high schools will be eighth grade to 12th grade, the archdiocese announced Wednesday.
The archdiocese runs more than 80 schools in greater New Orleans. When the unifying plan came out, Archdiocesan Schools Superintendent Jan Lancaster said about 35 schools would have to adjust.
"All of our schools will be making some sacrifices as part of this plan for the good of Catholic education in New Orleans," Archbishop Gregory Aymond said in a statement.
The changes were recommended in a 2013 strategic plan. Lancaster said in a Wednesday statement that the goal is "to ensure that the student experience would be uniform."
The only exceptions will be elementary schools whose buildings cannot accommodate pre-kindergarten classes. Other schools that do not comply will have to leave the archdiocesan system.
"While this would be regrettable and they would be missed in our family, we would respect their desire for autonomy," Aymond said.
Implementation plans are expected to be finished by the end of April. Schools that must add or remove more than one grade will have extra time -- one year per extra grade -- to finish the transition.
A spokesperson did not immediately return calls for more information.
